Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time. As an aviation industry leader, we are aiming to eliminate emissions at the airport completely by 2050, help the whole industry achieve a net-zero future and use our scale to help the wider economy decarbonise too.

Net Zero by 2050

The action we take today and over the next decade will define whether we succeed in decarbonising aviation. Find out more about Heathrow’s plan for the critical next decade.

A carbon-neutral airport

We are now carbon neutral. This means while the number of passengers who travel with us has nearly doubled since 1990, we have succeeded in cutting emissions from the energy used by our terminals and fixed infrastructure. At the same time, we have invested in pioneering natural solutions to remove carbon from the air, such as reforestation and restoring UK peatlands.

Find out more about how we are encouraging innovation in aviation technology, including take-off for electric flights.

Our expansion plans

Our expansion would only go ahead within strict environmental limits and it is our aspiration to make sure that growth from our new runway is carbon neutral.
